I construct paintings using thick acrylic paint and dyed canvas. I create sheets of acrylic paint that I later carve/cut and attach to stretched, dyed canvas. I am not interested in transforming these basic materials; rather, by allowing them to be nothing more than traditional materials, paint and canvas; my work is linked to the history of painting even though it is constructed in an untraditional manner. The smaller scale of my paintings and the controlled application of paint is a visual manifestation of my temperament and personality. In addition to the history of painting, my work is greatly influenced by the gridded landscape of Iowa where I was raised and the athletic fields and courts where I spent countless hours playing baseball, soccer, basketball, and golf.
