artist statement

Interested in a balance of chaos and structure, I explore materials and their boundaries in an attempt to understand the workings of my surroundings. As my identity teeters between a Russian and an American, I consider the abstract space in between. Combining quick prints with labored sewing, I create collaged works that are both 2 and 3 dimensional.

Driven by my immediate reactions to materials, I allow myself to play with the idea of binaries, both physically and figuratively. Ignoring any material hierarchy, I pursue a discovery of relationships and dynamics. Balancing qualities within color, texture, and process, fast versus slow, curves versus edges, hard versus soft: I seek to emulate a paradox I find in myself.
